Emphasizing his continued commitment to sound public policy based on principles of faith, family and liberty, local State Representative Dan Gattis filed election papers with the Texas Republican Party.
“I am honored to serve the people of District 20 in the Texas House of Representatives. I am proud of the many things that we have accomplished since I was first elected in 2003. Working together with local and regional community leaders and active citizens, we were able to pass laws that increased the punishments for those who prey on our children, better protect victims of domestic violence, and toughen drunk driving laws. I am pleased that I joint authored legislation that allowed local governments the ability to freeze taxes of seniors and the disabled. We have also successfully fought to provide greater property rights protections, greater Second Amendment protections, increased protections for the lives of the unborn, and supported traditional family values.
Gattis, now in his third term, serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, which helps determine state’s budget. As a member of the conference committee on the budget he had a key role in creating a balanced budget while also providing a safety net for those who are physically unable to care for themselves. He also serves on the House Natural Resources Committee, which has a part in setting Texas’ water policy.
Gattis has received numerous recognitions for his dedicated and effective leadership in the House. He was presented with the Law and Order Award by the Texas District & County Attorneys Association; he was selected as a Champion of Long Term Care by the Texas Health Care Association; he was named a Defender of The American Dream by Americans for Prosperity; and he was recently honored with the Legislative Excellence Award by the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas.
Gattis and his wife Shana, a former public school teacher and now a stay at home mom, are the proud parents of two preschool children and are active in community and church activities.
Regarding the 2008 election Gattis said, “I am honored to have received overwhelming support in the 2006 General Election. I’m not resting on past successes, and I realize that I must continue to work hard daily to maintain that level of public trust, and I pledge to do so.”
